Believe it or not–there are tons of ways to cut down your cable bill. Sometimes when you feel a pinch in your budget, you start to cut down on the things that aren’t “mandatory”. The great thing is that you can cut down and not even feel a difference. The average american family spends $1500 per year on cable expenses– imagine what that $1500 could do for you?!
Don’t let the cable tell you how much to spend. Take control and cut down a little. Besides, the idea is to save money.. and frankly, cable is not going to feed you
Here are some tips to saving on cable and some easy and affordable alternatives.
Cut down your cable package:
HD, Sports Channels, Premium Movie Channels–those things add up! Go basic and you will save an average of $30 per month.
Cable Alternatives:
There are so many great alternatives to cable right now.
- Netflix: Hundreds of already-aired TV series, plus an unrivaled movie library. (I found a whole season of Dawsons creek!
) Sign up for a FREE one month trial here. Starts at $8 per month - Cons to Netflix: You miss out on current tv shows.
- Blockbuster Total Access: Very Similar to Netflix and begins at $9.99 per month. Sign up for 50% off your first month here

My Name is Josie and I live in sunny Southern California and I am a stay at home mom to three beautiful boys. We all know that living in California is a task of it's own and saving in California IS possible! I started this blog mainly to share all the awesome deals out there and show others how to save in any area of life. Even though you may make the commitment to be frugal and pinch your pennies doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice!
Thank you so much for this Josie!!! I have been looking into an alternative because our cable is sooooo high, but since I am not to familiar with streaming from my computer I have no idea what I am doing..lol……So i been looking online to get some ideas.
Great post!
Thank you for posting this Josie! I really appreciate it! Now what to get the hubby on board with getting rid of cable and switching to Hulu and netflix. Any recommendation on internet?
Amazon has a lot of free streaming for Prime members, too.
We’ve had Netflix since 2009 and love it, but cut the cable service a little more than a year ago, it was difficult at the beggining for my 3 boys including my husband (cartoons and baseball
). I did not suffer, I love watching movies and shows without commercials, there is a lot to choose from Netflix and if you have Wii, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360, you can download the application and watch it on them, you can use your computer, netbook, laptop, iPad/iPod touch/iPhone and even in your Nintendo 3DS. We have the $7.99 per month subscription which allows us to watch in 2 devices, simultanously, but probably they have a more expensive subscription where you can use more than 2. I think I am writing so much but like I said I love Netflix, especially Horror genre
And if I am not mistaken they have a 1 month free trial, not sure about this but you can ask!
PS: and no I don’t work for Netflix, I just like it!
We do this easily from the Wii which has access to Netflix and Hulu. You download it for free and voila! (Yes we pay $8 each per month, that’s nothing compared to cable!)Hulu has A LOT of current shows. Now if they’re missing a show, say from Fox, or ABC, you just go to that channel’s website, stream the show, since they put them all up now a days, and hook up that HDMI cable Josie is talking about, from the laptop to the tv. Yes, both of them have an HDMI cable connection. And the quality is really good! I surprised my husband when we did this.
Do you need to have a internet in order to watch netflix or just subscribe to it?
Yes, unfortunatelty you do need internet access to view Netflix.
